20 Life Changing Rules Written By a Japanese Samurai 400 Years Ago That Will Really Change You
Each person walks the lifepath alone. Every single one of us, conscious or not, is searching for the purpose of existence. No two can compare, but still, we ought to follow a simple pattern to stay strong and prepared for all obstacles on our path. Japanese Buddhist claims that there are 20 rules that we must all follow if we want to live a happy and fulfilled life. The samurai Buddhist, Miyamoto Musashi created the list of 20 rules and his teachings are still popular today. According to the popular text ‘The Way of Walking Alone’ these are the tules that are going to help us live our lives as we want:
1. LEARN TO ACCEPT LIFE AS IT IS
If we want to keep mentally strong we need to accept the reality as it is. Anxiety, depression and stress may be triggered if we decide to live in a world of lies. Acceptance of the hardest aspects of our lives will help us become masters of our own destiny.
2. ABANDON ANY OBSESSION OF ACHIEVING PLEASURE
It’s natural for every human being to spend lot time chasing down pleasure. However, most of us don’t even see the bigger picture. Musashi claimed that we should just try to live in the moment and enjoy the pleasures ‘now and here’, because while chasing pleasures, we may lost the things that really matter to us.
3. DO NOT ACT ON AN IMPULSIVE EMOTION
We need to learn to be PATIENT. Patience is what this fast modern-day lifestyle needs. According to Musashi and his teachings, it’s not a good idea to always blindly follow your heart. He wanted to show us that all of us need to stick with what we know for sure, keep our stability and stay focused.
4. DO NOT OBSESS OVER YOURSELF
Self-obsession is another common thing for humans. In the 21st century and the social-media revolution, everybody is obsessed with what are the others thinking about them. If you want to live a happy live you need to get over your self-obsession and separate your ego from your important decisions.
5. NEVER ALLOW JEALOUSY TO RULE YOUR LIFE
Hatred has many forms- one of the worst is jelaousy. Mushasi claims that if you get stuck in the grasp of jelaousy, it will completely ruin your life. Be thankful for what you have and never be preoccupied with the lives of others.
6. ABANDON ATTACHMENT TO DESIRE
This is very similar to chasing pleasures. Sometimes our desires can bring fog in our minds and blind us. Follow the ideal to live not wanting more than you have and to wait for good things to come. This will make you worry less and be satisfied with yourself.
7. NEVER LIVE IN REGRET
As we already said, we need to accept the reality as it is. Living in the past won’t solve any issue, but will only create more. The things you’ve already done in the past determined who you are, and there is no need to open old wounds.
8. DO NOT DWELL ON A SAD SEPARATION
Also, you need to learn how to get over things. Sad separations are always tense, emotional and hurtful, but you need to learn that every single one of us walks the path alone and there’s nothing we can do. Some things and people are better to remained burried in the past.
9. COMPLAINING SHOULD HAVE NO PLACE IN YOUR LIFE
Most of the humans instinctively complain when things go wrong. According to Musashi’s teachings, if we want to live a happy life, we need to stop complaining about stuff. Sometimes is better just to let the things go. Dwelling and complaining are nothing but a waste of time.
10. DON’T LET LUST RULE YOUR LIFE
Take care! You don’t know in which form lust will appear in front of you and trie to imprison yourself in its claws. Lust will make you self-absorbed and obsessed and you will lose reality touch.
11. KEEP YOUR OPTIONS OPEN
Always be aware of your options and opportunities. You must not entrap yourself in the patterns of the modern society and waste all your passion on things you never wanted, but seemed ‘safe, stable and secure’.
12. DON’T BE A SLAVE TO YOUR SURROUNDINGS
Be open not to options and opportunities only- but to new ideas and creativity. Luxury, possession and reputtion- these things rule the lives of many, and you need to finds a way not to be like the others around you. Be resistable and unique- you won’t regret!
13. LEARN NOT TO BE GLUTTONOUS
Musashi thinks that we waste huge amount of time and energy on our pleasures in eating. According to him, we must not destroy the nature just for a couple of good tastes. He advices that we should focus on eating HEALTHY, not tasty.
14. ABANDON POSSESSIONS IN FAVOR OF MINIMALISM
Do you feel like you have too many unnecessary things? Well you need to get rid of them. If you are free from the chains of material world, you will have only the things necessary to you and you won’t spent tressures on things that will be of no use to you.
15. DO NOT BELIEVE SOMETHING JUST BECAUSE YOU’RE TOLD TO
We said that you should be openminded, but also you should be able to make your own decisions about what you believe in. Form your own ideas, make your own identity and stick to your views. Be always open for new progressive and productive ideas, but don’t let others fool you.
16. RESPECT THE GODS, BUT DO NOT RELY SOLELY ON THEIR GUIDANCE
Musashi said that we should respect the Gods, but we need to stay focused on our mission and follow our path. We should accept their guidance, but we need to remember that the only person we can rely on to find the truth of our existence and live a happy life is OURSELVES.
17. HAVE NO FEAR OF DYING
Dying is something that eventually happens to every single person. When you are born, you are cursed to die. That’s it… It is simple- if you want to be happy and mentally stable don’t let this kind of thoughts overshadow your mind.
18. DO NOT USE WEAPONRY UNLESS IT IS NECESSARY
Despite Musashi’s fame with a sword, he still believed that weaponry should be used sparingly and only when needed. He claimed that defending yourself was okay, but enforcing attack without reason was a sin.
19. DO NOT PUT PRESSURE ON RETIRING WITH RICHES
Many of us save for our retirement age so that we can live a life of luxury, but The Way of Walking Alone claimed we do not need possessions to live happily. Again, it was suggested we should live in the moment and not chase happiness in the form of possessions.
20. ALWAYS PROTECT YOUR HONOR
Musashi thinks that if you want to TRULY live by these rules you need to be an honorable person. First of all, you need to be true to yourself and true to the rest of the world. Stay strong and stick to your standards, never hit the rock bottom or go against your own rules and principles.
